About Ms. Parler

Welcome! My name is Rachelle Parler a.k.a. Ms. Parler to my students.
My passion for science began in 5th grade! My teacher (Mrs. Jones) decided to take a hands-on approach to science. She wore a Science Never Sucks T-shirt, placed a glass bottle with a narrow neck, a boiled and pealed egg, and matches on the table. Not a student spoke we watched and waited to be amazed! She lit 3 matches placed them in the bottle, and quickly placed the egg on top of the bottle.

When air is heated it expands (and takes up more room). As the heated air expands, some of it escapes out the bottle. When the matches go out, the air inside the bottle cools and contracts (and takes up less room), thus creating a lower pressure inside the bottle than outside. The greater pressure outside the bottle forces the egg into the bottle. She taught us about air pressure and from that day on SCIENCE NEVER SUCKED!

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Schreiner University.
During my college years my passion for science increased and took a different direction. My college adviser pointed me to a wonderful program called E.Y.H. (Expand Your Horizons). This program focuses on interesting girl’s grades 6th – 8th in a math and science careers. I created the forensic labs for the girls creating crime scenes and focusing on problem solving skills. I enjoyed the experience seeing the girls work together and seeing the light in their eyes when they solve the crime.

My philosophy of teaching
“A good teacher teaches facts BUT a great teacher teaches us real world applications. A great teacher gives us those unforgettable learning experiences.” – Steve Spangler

Science is meant to be interactive not something read in a textbook then forgotten. It is important for our next generation to focus on wonder, discovery, and exploration.

Hey Ms. Parler. I don’t know if you remember me, because it’s been almost 2 years since you taught me and my friends at Keefer Crossing Middle School, but I was looking through my old year book and I saw your picture and remembered talk of a website. Well, I found it, and I just wanted to say thanks for making me appreciate Science more. I wasn’t really interested in it, until 7th grade, when you where my teacher. Next year, well this coming school year, I’ll be in 9th grade, and I’m going to be taking Pre-AP Biology, and it’s mostly because of you. Thanks for being such an awesome teacher. E-mail me and tell me what’s been going on with you, and I’ll relay it to the rest of my friends that had your class. By the way, Cole Bradley and Corey Lanham say hi. Well, talk to you later.

Hey Sean! Of course I remember you. I enjoyed all your great questions in our discussions, and researching information for you. You are an amazing student! I am so proud of you for taking Biology Pre-AP. I remember my Biology AP class. It will be difficult, but it will lay the foundation for college. Thank you so much for the compliment. That is the greatest compliment a teacher can receive. I can’t believe my 7th graders will be freshmen in high school.
How is your brother? Are you still playing sports? I hope you are still being careful for your mother’s sake! :) Please tell Cole and Corey hello for me. I hope they are doing well!
Advice for freshmen: Remember you have to start at the bottom to get to the top! Good luck! :) Thanks for checking in with me. It means a lot!
    Take care,
    Ms. Parler
