Experiment # 2 – Plastic Bag Ice Cream !!!!

19 July 2008 No Comment

Hello again! I hope everyone is having a wonderful scientific summer! Here is an experiment I’m sure you will all want to try!

Please have your parent’s permission before doing the experiment! Read all materials and directions before attempting the experiment, and remember to have fun!

This recipe is enough for one person.

Materials:

  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk tastes better)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups ice
  • 4 tablespoons Rock salt (Ice cream salt)
  • 2 quart size Zip-loc bags (freezer bags if possible)
  • 1 gallon size Zip-loc freezer bag
  • Hand towel or gloves to keep fingers from freezing

Procedure:

  1. Mix the milk, vanilla and sugar together in one of the quart size bags.
  2. Seal tightly, allowing as little air to remain in the bag as possible. Too much air left inside may force the bag open during shaking.
  3. Place this bag inside the other quart size bag, again leaving as little air inside as possible and sealing well. By double-bagging, the risk of salt and ice leaking into the ice cream is minimized.
  4. Put the two bags inside the gallon size freezer bag and fill the bag with ice, then sprinkle the rock salt on top. Again let all the air escape and seal the bag.
  5. Wrap the bag in the towel or put your gloves on, and shake and massage the bag, making sure the ice surrounds the cream mixture.
  6. Allow five to eight minutes of shaking before stopping to check the mixture. Do not open the quart size bags until the mixture is frozen and hard to the touch. If is not keep shaking. If you do not wait until the mixture is frozen it will not taste like ice cream.

Questions:

  1. What does the salt do?
  2. What temperature does water freeze in degree C and degree F?
  3. Who invented ice cream?

Let me know how your experiments work and taste! Post your comments and questions! Have fun!
