Hi to all my former students. Thank you again for making my first year of teaching a great one! I will miss you all, but look forward to keeping in touch through my website. Bring on the questions and comments.
(Just make sure they are appropriate)
In order to post a question:
You can leave it here as a comment (requires that you create an account – it’s free, just let’s me know who’s asking the questions.)
Or you can email me.
Well until all of your questions start flying in, enjoy this awesome video!
Remember all the great experiments we did in class the past year. Well now you can see Steve Spangler in action! You might recognize one of the experiments. Let me know what you think!

OMG!
Lauren Kitto
U got the site up and running!! i’ve been waiting forever it seems…..
o ya i was just wondering wat the moon was called when it is just out in the day time..
cause like during the night its all bright and white and during the day it is harder to see but its still there so i just want to know wat they call it during the day!
thks if u can get back to me on that……
Good question Lauren! J
The Moon during the day is still called the Moon.
However, let me go a step further and tell you why the Moon can shine during the day. When we learned about space we learned that the Moon does not make its own light. The light we see at night or during the day is reflected light from the Sun. Think of the Sun as a large light bulb (during class), and the Moon as a mirror. During the night we can’t see the Sun because the Earth is blocking our view of it, but we can see its light reflected from the Moon. Remember: the Earth rotating on its axis causes day and night.
As for your question, there are situations when you can see both the light bulb (the Sun) and the light in the mirror (the Moon). It might help to try out.
Thanks for the question! Hope you are having a wonderful summer!
Don’t drink too much orange soda! J
Wooo! I see that you got the site up!
Yay!
Now I have a question so that my comment isn’t completely useless:
If snow is just frozen water, why isn’t it hard like ice, but soft like pillows? And even if the snow isn’t completely frozen, then how come normal water in our freezers won’t be like snow?
*drinks Lauren’s orange soda*
HI MRS. PARLER! Konichiwa from South Carolina!
Okies, I got a question. This is a serious question and I really want to knoe! Anna and I were debating this and came up with an answer but we are complete tards and more than likely didn’t come to the right conclusion… All chocolate addicts (aside from myself) should knoe that chocolate comes from a magical cocoa tree! So, therefore it must be a fruit or a vegemable! It has seeds so it could be a fruit but there are also ways that it could be a vegemable! And don’t say it’s neither cuz then it would just be a… a… a SOMETHING! We thought it was a fruit. (We also debated other things like toys and stuff…) Please answer me teh question! BYEZ!!!
-Amy
(P.S.- Chocolate and almonds taste good together!!!…)
okayy…. so i had the hiccups like and hour ago and i was just wondering why that if u get distracted your hiccups will just go away…. i cant decide if this is actually a scientiffical question or not but i was wondering
Lauren Kitto
one of my dad’s friends said if u gargled crunchy peanut butter then my hiccups would go away( i thought that was weird and kind of impossible) but ya thats my question!!!!
Oh yes, I remember that debate. I personally think that chocolate is a fruit, because fruits grow on trees, and vegetables grow underground. But, there are those chocolates that are super crunchy, and vegetables, like carrots, are crunchy.
See, don’t we make educated guesses? :3
Amy,
Alright let me try to answer your question. First, let me say that the chocolate you know and love does not come from a tree that way. The magical tree is called a cacao tree (pronounced Ka- KOW). The fruit of the cacao tree is called a pod. This grows on the trunk of the tree. Each pod contains a white pulp and about 30 to 40 seeds. The pods are harvested about 2 times a year, and the seeds or beans are what go on to make the chocolate you love. So really chocolate starts from the seeds inside the pod of the cacao tree. So all in all if you get technical I guess you would classify chocolate as a vegetable because of the bean, BUT I would have to say it’s neither. By the time something gets to the stage where it can be called chocolate, it’s candy!

I agree chocolate and almonds taste great together!
Hope that helps
Answer: Anna – Ice and Snow
Anna,
Let’s take a look at water. As you know, each water molecule is made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. The molecule is connected to one another by very strong chemical bonds called covalent bonds. (Co – meaning together). Water molecules are connected to each other by much weaker chemical bonds called hydrogen bonds.
ICE
When water gets cold the hydrogen bonds connect in different ways. A crystal lattice is formed when water is frozen. Ice is less dense than liquid water about 9% less dense (this is why ice floats).
Snow
Falling ice composed of crystals in complex hexagonal forms. Snow forms mainly when water vapor turns directly to ice without going through the liquid stage. The amount of air that the snow contains affects its volume (the amount of space it takes up).
The difference between ice and snow is the amount of air and the structure of the molecules.
Answer: Lauren – Hiccups
Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. As the muscle contracts repeatedly, the opening between your vocal cords snaps shut to check the inflow of air and makes the hiccup sound. Irritation of the nerves that extend from the neck to the chest can cause hiccups.
Causes
Doctors are still trying to find out why we get hiccups; however, here are some common associations.
Treatment
Now I’m a doctor, but here are some common home remedies.
For the record I’ve never heard of gargling crunchy peanut butter, but if you can figure out how to do it why not try.
Why it works
The reason that these remedies are thought to work is that carbon dioxide build-up in the blood will stop hiccups, which is what happens when you hold your breath. If the vagus nerve that runs from the brain to the stomach is stimulated, hiccups can also be alleviated (this is what is happening when you drink water
Fun Fact
Longest case of hiccups
American Charles Osborne suffered the hiccups from 1922 to 1990.

Alsoo i just must sayy that if science lovers everywhere have not yet noticed something i have here it is SCIENTIST HAVE VERY MESSY HAIR!!!!!!!!
it’s like they don’t even care for it!!!!!!!
i bet if you were to try to run a brush through it, it would loose all of the bristles in one try then get all sticky and gross and you would lose the brush cause it would probably get stuck….
http://z.about.com/d/physics/1/0/C/0/-/-/Einstein_tongue.jpg
well this is a great example for 2 things!!
1… Einstein had very messy hair
2… AND a completely awesome tounge!!!!
i am less than an inch away from the record now!!! yay!!!
Now Lauren we talked about this in class.
Great observation on scientist hair, BUT if you were trying to solve the problems of the world you wouldn’t have time to do your hair either.
Thank you so much for all the questions!
Just so you know I am in the process of moving. So please keep your questions coming. I will answer them asap!
Hey, just wondering (my mom’s friend just had her baby), why do baby’s eyes change color after they’re born? It just came to me. Thanks!
Hi Madison! Thanks for visiting the site! My summer has been busy. Still getting settled from the move.
Great question! Baby’s eye color can change after they are born this is due to the amount of melanin in the iris. Melanin is a dark pigment contained in the iris, the structure that controls how much light is allowed into the eye. Light eyes have very little pigment, whereas darker eyes have a lot. In newborns, the pigmentation process of the iris is not yet complete. Babies with darker skin are usually born with dark eyes that stay relatively dark. Iris color in lighter-skinned babies is usually a blue or bluish-gray color at birth, then change as they grow. Melanin production changes during the first year of life, usually resulting in a darker, deeper eye color.
Permanent eye color is not set until a baby is at least nine months old. An infant’s eye color is influenced by the eye color of their parents. Remember when we learned about genetics.
Okay, so I have a series of salt questions. Wierd, huh? Well, here goes.
1. How come it is dangerous to ingest salt water when we eat (or drink) so many things that contain salt. do the other ingrediants soften the affect?
2. This might be a really dumb question, but how does salt actually get in the ocean? Mom thought that maybe it had something to do with the minerals in the ground…
3. Okay, and lastly, when you treat ulsers by swishing warm salt water around in your mouth, how come it burns but it still heals your mouth?
Hola again Mrs. Parler! Me and Lauren were just wondering if Dark Vanilla would just be White chocolate? A friend of mine recently change an online name to “Dark Vanilla” and I asked her this very question. All three of us are stumped =3
Okayy i got a new email but i was just wondering……
What are the 23 flavors in Dr. Pepper????
and……..
when you boil polluted water the pollutants come out
but why when you boil a fish that has been living in the polluted water the pollutants don’t come out of the fish??
these questions keep me from sleeping!! okayy not really but i would still really love to know the answers!!!!!
Lauren Kitto!!

Hey! Sorry I haven’t emailed lately, I’ve been on vacation in Fredericksberg. Here’s my random question:
Why do dog’s noses get wet? I have been looking at Rufus and have noticed that his nose is wet sometimes and isn’t at other times. What causes that? And why does outside of the nose get wet, yet their noses don’t run?
Tell Daisy that I said Hi!
Why do dog’s noses get wet? Great question!
Another bonus for having a wet nose in the dog world is that the moisture makes the dog more sensitive to odors. You may know that a dog’s sense of smell is far stronger than a human. A dog’s nose might also be wet because they simply lick their noses with their tongues.
I found a couple of reasons. One evaporation or moisture from the nose helps cool the dog. The moisture is caused by the mucus lining. Remember dogs do not have sweat glands like humans…that’s why they pant and still out their long tongues.
A dog’s nose can run, but usually means that something is wrong with the dog. Could be a foreign object, an illness, or an allergy.
Thanks for coming back and visiting the site!
Say Hi! to Rufus for me
Hey Ms. P, awesome pics at NASA. You ready for the new school year at the new school to start?

Hey Ms. parler. It’s Sean Lewis from your most favorite 7th grade class. lol Just stopping by to say hi. I really wish you would’ve moved up to 8th grade Science cuz all we do is take notes!! Your class was awesome! Well I havent had any more (Life-threatening) injuries, but at the moment I have a broken hand so… I’ll tlk to u later.
Hey hey hey.
I moved and go to Moorehead now.
My brother goes to your school!
You teach at Grangerland now right???
Peace.
Hey Logan,
Yes, I am a 5th grade science teacher at Grangerland. What grade is your brother in? Who is his homeroom teacher? Good luck at Moorehead!
Thanks for checking in!
Sean,
I tell my 5th graders how fun and smart you all were last year. Who’s science class did you end up in?
What did you do to your arm? How is your brother? I miss my 7th graders!
Thanks for checking in! Take care
Ms. Parler
His homeroom is Mrs Williams.
And he is in 6th grade.
Do you know Ms Cox?
Logan,
Grangerland is having another parent night on Jan. 22nd from 6:30 to 8pm. You should come say “Hi” ! Room 111
I’ll sure try.
lol.
but do you know her?
[[Ms Cox]]
Mrs. Williams – Math? or LA/SS? There are two 6th grade teachers with the last name Williams. I know who Ms. Cox is yes…6th grade Math teacher. Why?
